On August 3, 2023, Delaware County’s Crozer Health’s computer systems were knocked offline due to a ransomware attack. The attack was targeted at the health system’s owner, Prospect Medical Holdings Inc. There are reports that their operations are severely hindered, with scenarios such as their pharmacies manually counting medications as they are unable to use their system.
Crozer Health, which includes Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland and Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park, had previously fallen victim to a malware attack. At the time, the organization stated that it had quickly isolated the problem. However, cybersecurity trade publications reported that some Crozer data was auctioned off after the organization declined to pay the ransom.
Ransomware is a type of malicious software that encrypts and disables files, rendering them unusable until a financial demand is met. The healthcare sector has been identified as the most popular target for such cyberattacks, primarily because it lags behind other sectors in cybersecurity measures.
In light of this event, it is imperative for businesses to conduct third-party cybersecurity assessments of their IT infrastructure. These audits can identify potential vulnerabilities and provide recommendations for strengthening cybersecurity measures. They serve as a proactive approach to prevent cyberattacks and protect sensitive data. Once there is a breach, it is too late. There must be a proper defense in place and a proper plan of attack should a breach ever occur. Ransomware is not going to slow down. It is here for the foreseeable future as broadband internet is now global and cryptocurrency allows hackers to be paid and escape without a trace.
